This is my career motto. Regardless of the company or your role within the company, “soak it up like a sponge” allows me to be in a position to understand the needs of others before decisions are finalized. It guides me to be accountable for the results as I am aware of the choices that may flow into my ultimate decision.

To be successful, you will benefit from learning everything possible about your company, your job, your team, your clients and be a subject matter expert in order to better listen and communicate as you serve those around you. This is a critical step in the learning process and is essential for you to succeed amidst the roadblocks. It is necessary to learn and understand prior to finalizing your decision as you are making decisions based on facts and data collected as you soak it all in.

Soaking it up like a sponge gives insight to be persistent as you ask why, allows you to understand the nuances of the business and your competition, and build connections within the company. Seek mentorship opportunities for yourself while you are mentoring others as this helps you to see the many sides of a problem, address multiple solutions and learn the business from the bottom up.

When you soak it up like a sponge, accountability comes naturally. You take pride in your work product as you collaborate and achieve mutual success. The rewards are endless and the lessons learned are invaluable.
